Yesterday, I overheard someone say that a sequel to the 2001 psycological thriller Donnie Darko is due out May 12. At first I thought it was a mistake, an error, a lapse of judgement. As soon as I got back to my dorm I visited YouTube and sure enough, there it was.
S.Darko follows Samantha Darko, the younger sister of Donnie as she is plagued by bizarre hallucinatory dreams warning her of the universe's imminent end. At first, I was overcome with joy. I never wanted Donnie Darko to end when I first saw it. I watched it over and over, each time becoming more and more enthralled with the world that was Donnie Darko.
My happiness, however, was short lived. Although the trailer looks interesting and a few of the same actors have returned, I was disheartened by the fact that Richard Kelly, the original creator, has stated that he has no involvement in the sequel. The fact that the movie will be going straight to DVD doesn't help its credibility either.
I just don't think that the cult phenomena of the original can be duplicated.
Give the trailer a look. Who knows? Maybe it will be the greatest movie of all time. Afterall, who saw Donnie Darko in theatres anyway?
