The first installment of an indefinite series highlighting movies to see before you die. Not necessarily the Oscar winners, or revolutionary cinema, just movies that hit home. Some will be new, most will be classics, but the movies picked bring something essential to the table...
I recently watched City of God with little to know expectations going into the viewing. Oftentimes this is when the best movies hit you, and this one certainly did. On the surface City of God is a movie about drugs and Mexico- what else is new? However, it is the manner in which the story is told (through concurrent and parallel narratives of individuals) that truly sets City of God apart. In addition, the main character/narrator, "Rocket", offers a poignant view of life in a drug culture in the 1970's that distinguishes itself from other hackneyed attempts (i.e Blow, American Gangster). If you can deal with subtitles and some naked men, City of God will impact you. Note: ranked #17 in IMDB top 250 movies of all time.
mexico? you sure you actually watched it? because the entire film is in portuguese, a language they dont speak in mexico. also, poverty to the extent depicted in the film exists no where else other than the favelas of brasil.
